Crossing Limits

(Warming up, Listening, Speaking)

1. What sort of questions do you think the reporter will ask? 你认为记者会问哪种问题? sorts of 各种各类;sort of 有几分;a sort of 一种……; e.g. In the marine museum, you can see sorts of fishes. 在水族馆,你可以看到各种各样的鱼。I sort of thought you might say that. 我多少有些料到你也许会那么说。

2. In their work, scientists meet with situations about which they have to make decisions. 科学家们在工作中,会遇到一些必须做出决定的情况。 meet with = come across; / run into; 遇到; e.g. When reading, you are sure to meet with some new words you don’t know. 阅读时,你肯定会遇到不认识的单词。 make a decision about… 对……做出决定; e.g. They have to make decisions about whether to go or not. 去还是不去,他们必须做出决定。

3. evaluate vt. 评价;估计; e.g. The scientists were evaluating the data. 科学家们正在评估这份资料。The teacher evaluated the composition of each student. 老师评价了每个学生的作文。evaluation n.评价;估计;evaluator n.评价者;evaluative adj.估计的;*** evaluate,estimate与value的区别:evaluate:判断与分析……的本质;estimate vt. n. 估计;猜测;(看法而已)。value vt. n. 估算……的价值 / 价格;重视;试比较:I estimate her age at 40. 我估计她有40岁。My estimate of his abilities was wrong. 我对他的能力估计错误。He valued the house for me at RMB 150.000. 他估价我这栋房子值15万元。I value your advice. 我重视您的忠告。I asked the building firm to estimate for the repairs to the stairs. 我请建筑公司估算一下修理楼梯的费用。

4. in the name of… 以……的名义;凭借……的权威; e.g. I arrest you in the name of law. 我以法律的名义拘捕你。Let me thank you in the name of us all. 我代表大家感谢你。 under the name of… 以(不是本名的)……的名字;He writes under the name of Yan Su. 他用严肃这个名字发表著作。 by the name of… 名叫……的;He goes by the name of Andrew. 大家都叫他安得鲁。

5. possess vt. 拥有; e.g. Our teachers possessed many fine qualities. 我们老师身上有许多优秀品质。The couple only possessed a bed, a table and four chairs when they married. 那对夫妇结婚时只有一张床,一张桌子,四把椅子。 possession n. 占有;所有;拥有;(复数名词possessions为):所有物;财产;财富;e.g. He is a man of great possessions. 他是一个富人。

*** take possession of 占有;夺取;拥有; have / get possession of 占有;拥有; in possession of占有;持有;拥有; in one’s possession 在某人手中; come into the possession of sb. 被某人占有;落入某人手中; come into possession of sth. 获得某物; e.g. How did you get possession of it? 你是怎样

得到它的? The policeman took possession of the thief’s bag. 警察没收了那个小偷的包。 The soldiers took possession of the enemy’s fort. 战士们夺取了敌人的要塞。 The keys are in his possession. 钥匙在他手中。

6. key n. 钥匙;答案;(常常与to连用) e.g. the key to the bike 自行车的钥匙;keys to exercises 练习答案;*** key n. (做定语) 核心;关键; e.g. The teacher

told us some key points of the text. 老师给我们讲了课文要点。Li Mei’s elder sister graduated from a key university in the south. 李玫的姐姐毕业于南方的

一所重点大学。They are doing research on a state key project. 他们在国家重点研究工程单位工作。

1. 2. exchange vt. n. 交换;调换;e.g. They exchanged their addresses and telephone numbers. 他们互相交换了住址和电话号码。She wanted to exchange the blouse because it didn’t fit. 她想调换这件衬衫,因为它不合身。An exchange of presents is a happy event. 交换礼物是一件快乐的事情。They made a silent exchange of smiles. 他们默默地相互微笑。 *** exchange sth. with sb.… 与某人交换某物;exchange…for… 以……交换……;in exchange for 作为交换的……条件; e.g. They often exchange information with each other. 他们经常互相交换信息。Can I exchange RMB for dollars here? 我在这儿能把人民币兑换成美元吗?I am giving him Chinese lessons in exchange for his teaching me English. 我教他汉语,作为交换条件他教我英语。
