When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who like to point out my shortcomings.
Week by week her list grew: I was very thin; I wasn’t a good student; I talked too much; I was too proud, and so on. I tried to bear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, then he asked, “Are the things she says true or not ? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change ( like being very thin ), but a good number I could and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I got a fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. “ That’s just for you.” he said. “ You know better than anyone, the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”
Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.

C. I was having more and more shortcomings as time went on.
D. Week by week she discovered more shortcomings of mine and pointed them out to me.
69. Why did her father listen to her quietly?
A. Because he believed that what her daughter’s “enemy” said was mostly true.
B. Because he had been so angry with his daughter’s shortcoming that he wanted to show this by keeping silent for a while.
C. because he knew that his daughter would not listen to him at that moment.
D. Because he wasn’t quite sure which girl was telling the truth.

Michael Jackson has been on the road of performing since he was five years old. For anyone who wants to know, the road to fame and fortune is a long, hard on to travel.
Michael remembers those early years when he was young. “My father was a machine operator,” he explained, “and he worked at a steel plant. My mother worked as Sears, a big department store. But they were both musicians.”
Mr. Jackson realized that his sons had a lot of talent(天赋), and he knew he could train them to become fine musicians. In those days there were plenty of music groups and some of them were very good. He knew if his sons were to stand out, they would have to be the best.

Michael wrote a lot of his own songs. “Songs came about in the strangest ways,” he said, “ I’ll just wake up from sleeping and there is a whole song coming into my head. And then I put it down on the paper.” Whatever he is doing, it works!
Still, with all his success, Michael manages to keep his head calm. “I just do a different job from other people,” he said, “ but it doesn’t make me think I’m better than other people.”
To be quite honest, his fans just love to hear and watch him!

Dear Mr. Headmaster,
I’m writing this letter to tell you something about our canteen. There are many kinds of food in our canteen, and generally they are cheap. Some food is delicious. The dining environment has been improved, with the walls painted and some pictures put up. The students are satisfied with the new look.
But students are not given a proper helping of every dish. Also, as the number of students is increasing, there is not enough space for us all to have meals there. As a result, many of us have to go out to have meals.
All in all, there is still much room for improvement in food quality and service.
Best wishes.
Sincerely yours,
Li Hua
